Melukavu is a picturesque village located at the eastern border of Meenachil Taluk in the Kottayam district of Kerala, nestled at the foothills of the Western Ghats. Known today as a Grama Panchayat, this region boasts a rich historical heritage across agricultural, social, religious, and cultural spheres. It is home to Ilaveezhapoonchira, a spot featured on the global tourism map, and is an integral part of the Poonchira – Illikkal Kallu – Marmala Waterfall – Vagamon tourism circuit. Poonchira offers unforgettable distant views covering Idukki, Ernakulam, Thodupuzha, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta, along with ancient dolmens (muniyara), numerous waterfalls, and rolling mist. Grass brooms woven from the leaves of a plant called Chitteenth and organic lemongrass oil are signature local products of Melukavu. The area also holds a unique traditional and cultural identity as home to a significant population of the Mala Arayan tribal community.
A unique cultural artifact exclusive to Melukavu is the Thamper percussion instrument, crafted by hollowing out the wood of a specific tree. Local artisans make and sell these instruments as a cottage industry. During the Christmas season, people gather here regardless of caste or religion—even from afar—to practice carols and join in home visits on Christmas Eve, making for a truly memorable celebration.
